What Are Academy Award Nominees
Academy Award nominees are films, performers, and craftspeople selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as finalists in each category. The nominees are announced before the ceremony, and the winners are chosen by Academy voting members.
How Nominees Are Selected
Members of the Academy vote in preliminary rounds to determine the shortlist. In a second round, they vote again to finalize the nominees. The process varies slightly by category, but it relies on ranked or preferential ballots among eligible members.
Recent Trends in Nominees
Recent nominee lists show a broader range of international films, streaming releases, and underrepresented filmmakers. The Academy has expanded voting membership and adjusted eligibility rules to reflect changes in how films are distributed and viewed.
