Who Was Edith Bunker

Edith Bunker was the warm, patient wife of Archie Bunker on the long-running sitcom All in the Family. Played by Jean Stapleton, she became one of television’s most recognizable working-class housewives during the 1970s.

How Did Edith Die

Edith Bunker died of a stroke in the episode titled “Edith’s Crisis of Faith.” The storyline aired in two parts during the 1979–1980 season and was written to show the family’s grief in a realistic way.

Impact on the Show and Cast

Jean Stapleton chose to leave the series, and the show continued with the remaining characters adjusting to life without Edith. All in the Family later returned as the spin-off Archie Bunker’s Place, where off-screen references kept her memory part of the story.
