Smoking Age and Military Service

At 18 you can legally buy tobacco in the U.S., but military rules may limit where you can use it. The Department of Defense bans smoking in many indoor spaces and on certain installations, even for those who are 18 or older. The legal purchase age is 21 for cigarettes and smokeless tobacco on military property under the 2019 federal law.

Branch-Specific Tobacco Policies

Each service sets additional restrictions. The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard generally prohibit smoking inside buildings, in uniforms, and near medical facilities. Some bases ban vaping entirely, and many restrict sales of tobacco products on post exchanges. Service members under 21 may not purchase tobacco on base, even if they are legally 18.

Why These Rules Exist

The policies aim to protect health, readiness, and safety. Smoking and vaping increase long-term health risks and can affect performance. For current rules and guidance, see the official Department of Defense tobacco policy page at Defense.gov Tobacco Policy.
