What Is the Jellicle Ball in Cats
The Jellicle Ball is the annual gathering of Jellicle cats in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cats. During the ball, the cats compete to be chosen for the Jellicle Choice, which grants them a new life at the Heaviside Layer.
Origin and Story Context
The concept comes from T.S. Eliot's 1939 poetry collection Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. In the stage show, the Jellicle Ball frames the plot, with each cat introducing itself before the leader selects one for rebirth.
Why the Jellicle Ball Matters
The Jellicle Ball is the emotional and narrative climax of Cats. It explains the show's structure, supports its theme of community and renewal, and gives the famous song "Memory" its context. For audiences, it highlights the ritual and stakes that drive the musical.
