Who Was Ed Gein

Movies Inspired by Ed Gein

Gein directly inspired several horror films. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) drew on his crimes for the character of Leatherface. Psycho (1960) was loosely influenced by Gein, as was The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and its sequel Hannibal. The 2003 film Ed Gein adapted his life more directly.

Why His Case Matters

Investigators and filmmakers studied Gein because his crimes exposed details about isolated offenders, grave robbery, and the creation of makeshift trophies. His case shaped modern true crime reporting and horror storytelling. For more details, see the FBI's case summary at https://www.fbi.gov/history/famous-cases/ed-gein
