Background and Captivity

Elisabeth Fritzl was held captive in a concealed basement chamber beneath the family home in Amstetten, Austria, for 24 years. Her father, Josef Fritzl, imprisoned her after she was 18 years old. During this time, he repeatedly abused her and fathered children with her in isolation.

Escape and Discovery

Elisabeth Fritzl escaped in April 2008 when she convinced Josef Fritzl that one of their children needed immediate hospital care. She walked out of the basement with one of her children and sought help at a local hospital. Police quickly identified Josef Fritzl and arrested him. Authorities then discovered the hidden cellar where Elisabeth and her children had been confined.

Josef Fritzl was convicted on multiple charges, including murder, enslavement, rape, and incest. In March 2009, an Austrian court sentenced him to life imprisonment. Elisabeth Fritzl and her children received extensive medical and psychological care. The case prompted reforms in Austria regarding police procedures and the monitoring of suspicious household situations. For more details, see the BBC overview of the Fritzl case.
