What Is Ethanol Poisoning

Ethanol poisoning occurs when a person consumes a toxic amount of ethyl alcohol, commonly found in alcoholic beverages, mouthwash, and certain solvents. The liver processes alcohol at a limited rate, so excess ethanol builds up in the blood and affects the brain, heart, and other organs.

Common Symptoms and Warning Signs

Early signs include slurred speech, confusion, dizziness, and nausea. As poisoning worsens, a person may experience vomiting, slow or irregular breathing, hypothermia, seizures, and loss of consciousness. In severe cases, ethanol poisoning can lead to coma or death.

Immediate Response and Treatment

If ethanol poisoning is suspected, call emergency services immediately. Do not try to make the person vomit. Keep them awake and sitting upright if possible, and provide breathing support until help arrives. Medical treatment may include intravenous fluids, oxygen therapy, and monitoring of vital signs.
