What Was Heaven's Gate?

Heaven's Gate was a UFO religion founded in the early 1970s by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. The group taught that followers could leave their human bodies and board a spacecraft trailing the Hale-Bopp comet to reach a higher level of existence.

Connection to Rancho Santa Fe

The group operated from a secluded mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, California, a gated community in San Diego County. The property served as a compound where members lived communally, followed strict rules, and prepared for what they described as a physical evacuation.

The 1997 Mass Suicide

In March 1997, 39 members of Heaven's Gate died in a coordinated mass suicide at the Rancho Santa Fe home. Each person ingested a lethal mix of phenobarbital and vodka and wore identical black clothing and Nike shoes. The deaths were ruled a group suicide and brought widespread attention to the group's beliefs.
