How Many Presidents Have Been Re Elected
Fifteen U.S. presidents have won a second term. Twelve were re elected to a consecutive second term, and three served nonconsecutive terms after leaving office.
List of Re Elected Presidents
Ulysses S. Grant, Grover Cleveland, Woodrow Wilson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama each won a second consecutive term. Cleveland also returned for a nonconsecutive second term. For a full list of U.S. presidents and their terms, see the official White House historical overview.
Why Most Presidents Serve Only One Term
Twenty‑one presidents served only one term. Incumbents can lose reelection due to economic downturns, unpopular policies, or strong opposition campaigns. The two‑term tradition, later codified by the 22nd Amendment, also limits most presidents to eight years in office.
