Early Career and General Motors

John DeLorean was an American engineer and executive who rose through General Motors in the 1950s and 1960s. He led the Pontiac division and later became a vice president at GM before leaving in 1973.

DeLorean Motor Company and the DMC-12

In 1975, DeLorean founded the DeLorean Motor Company in Northern Ireland to build a futuristic sports car, the DMC-12. The company struggled financially, and production ended in 1982 after fewer than 9,000 cars were built.

In 1982, DeLorean was arrested in the United States on drug trafficking charges, though he was later acquitted. He continued to work on automotive projects until his death in 2005. The DeLorean name remains widely recognized, partly due to its appearance in the "Back to the Future" film series. For more background, see the biography at Britannica.
