Why Number 21 Is Significant in MLB
Number 21 is most famously associated with Roberto Clemente, the Hall of Fame right fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The league honors his legacy each year on Roberto Clemente Day, and many players wear 21 to recognize his career and humanitarian work.
Players Who Have Worn Number 21
Beyond Clemente, notable MLB players who have worn number 21 include Adrian Beltre, David Ortiz, and Manny Ramirez. In 2024, MLB continued to allow players to wear 21 on Roberto Clemente Day, following league guidelines documented on MLB.com.
Retirement and Usage of the Number
MLB has not officially retired number 21 league-wide, but the Pirates have kept it closely tied to Clemente’s memory. Teams generally avoid reissuing the number out of respect, and it remains one of the most recognized symbols in baseball.
