What Is Subcutaneous Air Under Skin

Subcutaneous air is gas trapped in the soft tissue beneath the skin. It is sometimes called subcutaneous emphysema. The air collects between skin layers and can feel like crackling when pressed.

Common Causes

It often happens after chest trauma, lung surgery, or a collapsed lung. Air can leak from the lungs or airways into surrounding tissue. Severe infections, certain medical procedures, and injuries to the chest or neck are frequent triggers.

Symptoms and When to Seek Care

Signs include swelling, mild pain, and a crackling sensation under the skin. If the swelling spreads quickly, or you have trouble breathing, chest pain, or fever, get medical help right away. A doctor can confirm the diagnosis and rule out serious problems.
