Who Played Pennywise in the Movies
Tim Curry originated Pennywise in the 1990 television miniseries based on Stephen King's novel. In the 2017 film It and its 2019 sequel, Bill Skarsgård portrayed the character, bringing a new interpretation to the iconic clown.
Bill Skarsgård's Approach to the Role
Skarsgård studied clown performances and used subtle physicality to create an unsettling presence. He avoided traditional scary clown tropes, focusing on unnatural stillness, unusual pauses, and a calm, almost playful menace that distinguished his version from earlier portrayals.
Why Casting Matters for Horror Characters
Casting choices shape how audiences perceive horror icons. Skarsgård's casting shifted Pennywise from a campy figure to a more psychological threat, influencing merchandise, cosplay, and the broader perception of the character in modern pop culture.
