Top 10 Largest City by Population
The largest cities by population are dominated by megacities in Asia and Africa. Tokyo leads with over 37 million residents in its metro area, followed by Delhi and Shanghai. Rapid urbanization and migration continue to push these urban agglomerations to the top of the rankings.
Top 10 Largest City by Area
When measured by land area, cities like Hulunbuir in China, New York, and Tokyo span vast territories that include rural and suburban zones. Area-based rankings highlight how administrative boundaries and geographic features shape city size beyond dense urban cores.
Why City Size Matters
City size affects infrastructure, housing, transport, and economic output. Larger populations drive demand for services and investment, while sprawling areas create challenges in planning and sustainability. Understanding these dynamics helps businesses, governments, and researchers track urban trends.
