Who Was Little Edie

Little Edie was born Edith Bouvier Beale in 1917. She was the daughter of a socialite and the first cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. She worked as a model and actress before gaining wider public attention later in life.

Life at Grey Gardens

In the 1970s, Little Edie and her mother, Big Edie, lived in a decaying mansion in East Hampton, New York. The property became known as Grey Gardens. A documentary filmed there showed their unusual daily life and drew national interest.

Later Years and Death

After the documentary brought fame, Little Edie continued to live in and around Grey Gardens. She sold the property and later moved to Florida. She remained a public figure through media appearances and interviews. She died in 2002 at the age of 84. For more background on the Beale family story, see the Britannica entry on Little Edie.
