What Is an MTG Seat

An MTG seat is a player’s assigned position at a Magic: The Gathering event. It identifies your table, round pairing, and seating order in a tournament. Seat numbers are usually assigned by the event organizer or tournament software before play begins.

What Happens to Your Seat During an Event

During a tournament, your seat stays fixed for each round unless you are moved by a judge. After a round ends, pairings are posted, and you may move to a different table for the next round based on your results. If you leave the event area without checking out, your seat may be marked as a bye or loss, depending on the rules.

What Happens to Your Seat After the Event

After the event, your seat data is used to finalize standings, pairings, and tiebreakers. Tournament organizers may retain records for standings, prizes, and reporting to Wizards of the Coast. For official rules on seating and pairings, see the Magic Tournament Rules at https://magic.wizards.com/en/tournament-rules.
