Criteria for Ranking the Best Running Back
Evaluating the best running back relies on career production, longevity, and advanced metrics. Key stats include total rushing yards, yards per carry, and touchdowns. Analysts also consider playoff performance and durability over a full career.
Top Contenders in NFL History
Players like Jim Brown, Emmitt Smith, and Barry Sanders consistently appear at the top of historical lists. Jim Brown averaged a record 104.3 yards per game in his career. Emmitt Smith holds the all-time rushing record with 18,355 yards, while Barry Sanders posted elite single-season totals despite a shorter career.
